See you feign surprise
December 3, 2009 – 7:04 pmWhen I was in first grade, the powers that be thought I was so smart that it would be a good idea to bump me to the second grade. Not knowing what I was in for, I moved along to the second grade. Long story short, I hated it, missed my friends in my first grade class, and asked to move back to the first grade.
At that time, the decision to make a move wasn’t up to me. As an adult, however, I’d like to think I have a bit more freedom to move about the cabin, as it were.
But one valuable lesson that I learned from that experience oh-so-many years ago was this: do what makes you happy. While skipping a grade would have changed my life’s path, I have no regrets on choosing to be with my friends.
I also believe that option to move back to first grade taught me the importance of doing what I need to do to get my way. That doesn’t mean I’ve grown up to be a manipulative person, but I do recognize that sometimes you have to bend to fit someone’s perception to move ahead. If it means giving off the perception that I’m not the brightest bulb, so be it. I just figure it will be my little secret as I walk away smiling.
